What's it like to be a Mechatronics Engineer?
Mechatronics Engineers develop smart machines that can process information and make decisions. Mechatronics Engineers are involved in designing, testing and manufacturing machines and systems using combination of electrical and mechanical systems, robotics, computer science, and product engineering.
Tasks and duties
- Developing solutions to problems with mechanical and electronic processes.
- Designing, building and implementing equipment modifications to help improve safety and reliability.
- Developing project specifications with colleagues, often with those from other engineering disciplines.
- Recommending modifications following prototype test results.
- Conducting modelling, simulation and analysis of engineering systems.
- Developing electronic, mechanical or computer processes for tasks that may be dangerous for humans.
Mechatronics Engineers may work in engineering companies, processing facilities, laboratories, and tech businesses. They are employed across industries such as manufacturing, mining, and defence, but particularly in emerging fields involving bioengineering, nanotechnology and robotics.
How to become a Mechatronics Engineer
To become a Mechatronics Engineer you are usually required to hold a degree in engineering majoring in mechatronics or robotics.
- Complete a bachelor degree in the field of engineering. This will usually be a Bachelor of Engineering (majoring in mechatronics or robotics). Entry to these courses is generally based on Year 12 results and having met the requirements for prerequisite subjects (usually mathematics, chemistry and physics).
- To work independently as a Mechatronics Engineer, most states require you to have a Professional Engineer’s Licence. This is usually gained after at least four years of practice as an engineer.
- Mechatronics Engineers may undertake a Masters of Mechatronics Engineering in order to increase their chances of becoming a consultant, manager or project leader.
