What's it like to be an Audiologist?
Audiologists are qualified health specialists with expertise in hearing defects, communication impairments and balance issues. They work with patients to preserve, manage and improve their hearing and ability to understand sounds. They work with people of all ages, from infants to older adults, fitting and testing hearing aids.
Tasks and duties
- Administering and interpreting a wide range of tests to determine hearing efficiency and locate sites of detected hearing problems.
- Analysing test results and identifying root causes of hearing problems.
- Prescribing and testing appropriate hearing aids and cochlear implants and instructing patients for use.
- Reporting results of testing in writing and providing recommendations and referrals to relevant medical practitioners.
- Assessing hearing levels of workers in occupations at high risk of hearing damage, including pilots or members of the armed forces.
Audiologists work in hospitals, community health centres, private practices or universities. Some Audiologists also work in healthcare research assisting in the development of new technologies, or testing the hearing of workers in the armed forces, such as pilots
How to become an Audiologist
To become an accredited Audiologist, you will need to complete a relevant bachelor degree followed by a two-year masters degree in audiology that has been approved by Audiology Australia, as well as a one-year clinical internship.
- Complete a bachelor degree. A degree in science, biomedical science, health science or arts with a major in linguistics may provide you with foundational knowledge and prepare you for the further study required.
- Complete an accredited two-year Master of Clinical Audiology.
- Undertake a one-year clinical internship under the supervision of an experienced Audiologist. On completion, you’ll be eligible to be certified as an Accredited Audiologist with Audiology Australia and work as a Qualified Practitioner (QP).
- Renew accreditation every 12 months by demonstrating mandatory continuing professional development (CPD).
