Very research focused degree which was fantastic if you enjoyed the hands on, practical experience - both outdoors and in the lab. However the ability to tailor the degree with other subjects give you flexibility to delve into aspects of environmental management or sustainability.

Heavily tailored towards marine ecology but didn't mention this on signing up, terrestrial ecology subjects were listed but always unavailable to enroll into. Macquarie University lacked person service and very much felt like one size fits all.

Student review
Being half structured and half electives it allowed me to explore beyond a major and create a unique learning experience. The subjects were exactly what I wanted to learn about, some turned out to be run badly but mostly good and that changes year to year. Career staff had no experience in the field to help with jobs at all and it took years to actually find work in a related field. Academics were knowledgeable but not interested in speaking to students outside of class structure. Most practical aspects were great but there could be so much more, even without the effort of field trips. Many classes defaulted to going to the zoo or putting Attenborough docos on repeat. Try just going outside!! The general Macquarie student and staff care and vibe is quite poor. Recommend part time study or really getting involved in student life to improve the overall study experience.
