- Jobs market settles into period of sustained growth
- New job ads nationally have risen more than 40% in past 12 months
- New job ads and SEEK Employment Index up 5% over past three months
- Steady upward trend in NSW and Victoria in June
The number of new job ads placed on SEEK, Australia's number one job website, increased again in June by 2.3% (figure 1). The SEEK ‘New Job Index' measures flow of new jobs advertised for the month and as such is the leading economic indicator of job activity across the country.
Both the number of new job ads and the SEEK Employment Index have increased by about 5% over the past three months, indicating the employment market has transitioned from a rapid recovery phase in 2009 to sustained steady growth.
The results are bolstered by findings that new job ads nationally have risen more than 40% in the past 12 months, with Australia's two largest markets faring even better – New South Wales up 44.9% and Victoria up 42.5 %. Job prospects in Western Australia also remain strong with a 58.8% yearly increase despite last month's short term growth pause potentially linked to the uncertainty surrounding the proposed tax on mining.
The SEEK Employment Index, a measure of the relative balance between supply (job applicants) and demand (job ads) in the Australian labour market, increased a solid 2.2% in June compared to more modest increases since February 2010. The SEI is now nearly 36% higher than a year ago.
SEEK Managing Director Joe Powell said June figures are indicative of a path of continued positive growth in Australia.
"June's figures demonstrate continued movement in the right direction and clearly show that, after a period of rapid recovery during 2009, the jobs market has settled into a pattern of sustained steady growth," he said.
"A striking feature of the June data is strong job growth in the largest states of New South Wales and Victoria. New ads rose by 2.9% in New South Wales in June, 44.9% higher than a year earlier, while in Victoria new ads rose by 2.6% in June, 42.5% higher than in June 2009. Such a strong performance in the two largest labour markets will continue to underpin the overall national position."

The SEEK Employment Index
The SEEK Employment Index (SEI), a dynamic snapshot of the match between the supply of jobseekers (applications) and the demand for workers (job ads) on SEEK, increased 2.2% in June (figure 2). For the three months to June 2010, the SEI rose by 4.7% and is now 35.8% higher than a year earlier.
At a regional level, the SEI exhibited similar patterns in the largest states for June. Results were strongest in Victoria, which saw an increase of 3.6% (on top of another 3.6% in May), followed by South Australia with 2.8%, New South Wales rose by 2.2% and Western Australia by 1.4%. Queensland saw a minor increase of 0.5%. The strengthened job market means that it's becoming increasingly easier for jobseekers to find jobs and harder for employers to find candidates.

Job Applications
New job applications were steady in June, rising by 0.2%. The breakdown of those positions that have the most applications (most competitive occupations) to those with the lowest applications (most sought after) illustrates the competitive market.
"The most competitive positions for job seekers in June were call centre operators, process workers and kitchen hands, similar to what we saw in May. Demand is strongest for highly qualified roles in university education, geosciences and allied health so it should be easier for jobseekers to find jobs in these areas," said Joe Powell.

STEADY JOB FIGURES DESPITE GROWTH PAUSE IN WA
The number of new job ads placed on SEEK, Australia's number one job website, increased again in May by 1.6% (figure 1). The SEEK ‘New Job Index' measures flow of new jobs for the month and as such is the leading economic indicator of job activity across the country.
Interestingly Western Australia saw a minor decline, the first time the jobs market in the state has taken a pause in 12 months. SEEK Managing Director Joe Powell said this result may be indicative of the early effects the proposed super tax is having on the mining industry.
"May's figures show a steady and positive direction, although growth has moderated over the last few months. Given WA's very strong growth since June 2009 the pause seen here is an area worth monitoring, particularly over the next few months to assess if in fact miners are pulling back on recruitment due to the proposed resources tax."
"But overall it's continued good news for job seekers and employers alike in May, with the job market now having shown a positive direction for nearly a year" said SEEK's Managing Director Joe Powell.
"Steady growth in job ads was seen across most states. The jobs market in May was particularly positive for job seekers in Victoria with a 3% rise in new job ads, while Queensland and New South Wales also reported positive growth. Western Australia dropped marginally."

The SEEK Employment Index

Results were strongest in Victoria, which saw an increase of 4.2% and positive across other states. New South Wales (1.6%), Queensland (2.7%) and South Australia (1.1%) enjoyed growth, while Western Australia saw a minor decline of -0.8%. The strengthened job market means that it's becoming increasingly easier for jobseekers to find jobs and harder for employers to find candidates.

Job Applications
New job applications were down slightly in May (-0.6%). However, put in context SEEK is still at near record levels of applications since the index started.
The breakdown of those positions that have the most applications (most competitive occupations) to those with the lowest applications (most sought after) illustrates the competitive market.
"The most competitive positions for job seekers in May were call centre operators, process workers and kitchen hands. Demand is strongest for highly qualified roles in construction, estimating and university education, so it should be easier for jobseekers to find jobs in these areas," said Joe Powell.
"The second most-in-demand position in May was for managers in the mining, oil and gas sectors, again indicating that this sector is important in Australia's job market at present."

CONTINUED STRENGTH IN JOBS MARKET
The number of new job ads placed on SEEK, Australia's number one job website, increased again in April by 0.5% (figure 1). The SEEK ‘New Job Index' measures flow of new jobs for the month and as such is the leading economic indicator of job activity in the country.
The April new job ad figures show that the Australian job market has undergone 11 consecutive months of growth since June 2009, an increase of 34.5%. Western Australia has risen by 61.2% per cent over the same period. New South Wales has also performed well, with new job ads up by 4% in the three months to April. Currently on SEEK there are over 120,000 job ads.
"The continued growth in new job ads indicates employer confidence is up and the demand for employees is increasing," said SEEK's Managing Director Joe Powell.
"The resources investment in Western Australia is translating into rapid growth in new job ads which no other state can match. It will be interesting to see what impact the proposed new mining tax will have on growth over the next few months."
"The jobs market in April was particularly positive for job seekers in Western Australia with a 4.5% rise in new job ads. New South Wales reported positive growth of 0.2% while Victoria, Queensland and South Australia dropped marginally."

JOB CONFIDENCE UP AS EMPLOYEES SHOP AROUND
The Australian job market remained stable in March, with the number of new job ads growing by 0.3% (figure 1) according to the latest SEEK Employment Index figures.
However the number of Australian job-seekers reached an all-time high, with 4.2 million people searching for jobs on SEEK, Australia's number one job website. There were also a record number of job applications in March, indicating jobseekers are feeling more upbeat and confident about changing jobs.
"As consumer confidence builds, employees are looking for jobs in bigger numbers than ever before," said SEEK's Managing Director Joe Powell.
"At the peak of the downturn, people were reluctant to leave the security of their current job. We've seen a steady increase in the number of new job ads since June 2009 and the number of job seekers is now catching up to the demand."
"The new ad growth we've been reporting since June last year, along with the ongoing rise in full-time employment nationally, has attracted jobseekers who are now confident enough to think about moving on to a new role."
"Nationally it's good news for those in the construction and real estate sectors as these are the most difficult to fill. It's more competitive for call centre operators and retail sales assistants as these positions are receiving the most applicants."

While job ads remained steady with 0.3% growth, the high number of people actively looking for new jobs reflects the strength of the recovery indicated by the latest interest rate rise.
The March New job ads figures show that the Australian job market has undergone 10 consecutive months of growth, with new ads rising 35.2 per cent since June 2009. Western Australia has risen by 54.1 per cent over this corresponding period. More than half of this increase nationally has occurred since November 2009. The SEEK ‘New Job Index' measures flow of new jobs for the month and as such is the leading economic indicator of job activity in the country.
Slight increases in the job market for March were reported in NSW, Victoria and Western Australian in March, which Queensland and South Australia dropped marginally.
The SEEK Employment Index
After three months of strong increases, the SEEK Employment Index (SEI), a dynamic snapshot of the match between the supply of jobseekers (applications) and the demand for workers (job ads) on SEEK, increased by a relatively small 0.3 per cent in March due to the increasing growth in applications
(figure 2).
Results were steady across states with relatively small changes to the index. New South Wales (2.6 per cent), Victoria (1.3 per cent) and Western Australia (0.5 per cent) enjoyed a moderate improvement. South Australia was down 5.1 per cent and Queensland down 1.9 per cent. The steady job market means that it's continuing to become easier for jobseekers to find jobs and harder for employers to find candidates.

Job Advertisements by State
New job ads placed with SEEK rose by a seasonally adjusted 0.3 per cent for March. New job ads increased in New South Wales (1.9 per cent), Queensland (0.4 per cent) and Western Australia (0.3 per cent).*
* State and national estimates are adjusted separately and the latter is not the average of the former, particularly in times when seasonal effects are particularly strong and the economy is going through major cyclical changes.

NEW JOB ADS CONTINUE TO GROW IN FEBRUARY
The recovery of the Australian job market continues with new job ads rising nationally by a seasonally adjusted 2.4 per cent in February (figure 1).
New ads have risen by 36.2 per cent since their trough in June 2009, with more than half of this increase occurring since November 2009.
Unlike other Australian job indices, the SEI measures the flow of new jobs for the month, rather than stock of jobs at a point in time, and as such is the leading economic indicator of job activity in the country.

The rebound in labour market conditions continues to be distributed across all regions, with the states that had been lagging the recovery in the second half of 2009 (Queensland and South Australia) improving in February.
Western Australia continues to be the strongest performer, with new job ads in the state growing 21.9 per cent in the three months to February 2010. Job ads rose by 16.4 per cent in South Australia; 15.8 per cent in Queensland; 15.6 per cent in Victoria ; and 14.6 per cent in NSW for the same period.
SEEK Employment Managing Director Joe Powell said the sustained growth in job ads nationally was a positive sign of improving employment conditions in 2010.
“The SEEK Employment Index has highlighted a continuing recovery in the job market for several months,” said Mr Powell. “Looking at the trend in new job ads and the growing number of applicants, people seem to be comfortable reviewing their options again and are actively seeking new job opportunities. If this continues, the job market will become more favourable for job seekers in 2010.”
“This rings true with our last employee satisfaction & motivation study in September 2009, which showed almost 5 in 10 employees thinking about moving in the next 6 months as economic conditions improve.”

After three months of strong increases, the SEEK Employment Index (SEI), a dynamic snapshot of the match between the supply of jobseekers (applications) and the demand for workers (job ads) on SEEK, increased by a relatively small 0.3 per cent in February due to the increasing growth in applications
(figure 2.).
Results were steady across states with relatively small changes to the index. New South Wales (1 per cent), Queensland (1.1 per cent), South Australia (1.7 per cent) and Western Australia (0.3 per cent) enjoyed a moderate improvement. Victoria recorded no change in the index. This trend means that it’s continuing to become easier for jobseekers to find jobs and harder for employers to find candidates.

New job ads placed with SEEK rose by a seasonally adjusted 2.4 per cent for February. New job ads increased in New South Wales (3.3 per cent), Victoria (1.8 per cent), Queensland (3.5 per cent), South Australia (0.7 per cent) and Western Australia (2.9 per cent).*
* State and national estimates are adjusted separately and the latter is not the average of the former,particularly in times when seasonal effects are particularly strong and the economy is going through major cyclical changes.
Job Applications
New job applications rose by a seasonally adjusted 2.1 per cent for February.
The breakdown of those positions that are candidate rich (most competitive occupations) to those in high demand (most sought after) again illustrate the importance of qualifications in a competitive market.

SOLID START FOR JOB MARKET IN 2010—NEW JOB ADS UP 7.1%
THE SEEK EMPLOYMENT INDEX (SEI), a dynamic snapshot of the match between the
supply of jobseekers (applications) and the demand for workers (job ads)on seek.com.au, firmed
by 2.9 per cent for January.
Most notably, new job ads rose by a seasonally adjusted 7.1 per cent.
New ads have now risen by 31.8 per cent since their trough in June 2009 and suggest that the labour
market is following a pronounced U-shape pattern—the sharp fall in ads after the December 2007 peak
now being followed by a positive looking trend.
SEEK New Job Ads Index (Average 2002-04 = 100), seasonally adjusted
Unlike other Australian job indices, the SEI measures the flow of new jobs for the month, rather than
stock of jobs at a point in time, and as such is the leading economic indicator of job activity in the
country.
While the persistent rebound in labour market conditions is being felt in all states and territories, the
speed of the labour market recovery across the mainland states varies. Western Australia is setting the
pace, with New South Wales and Victoria also performing strongly. Although having turned a corner,
Queensland and to a lesser extent South Australia, are lagging by comparison. New job ads in Western
Australia have grown an astonishing 50 per cent between June 2009 and January 2010, while in
Queensland the increase has only been about 20 per cent.
SEEK Employment Managing Director Joe Powell said the start to 2010 was reassuring, with the
sustained improvement a strong sign that job growth may have turned the corner.
"The steady recovery of the labour market now seems to be showing a clear trend in the right direction,"
said Mr Powell. "Looking at the trend in new job ads, it would appear that unemployment has peaked
below the higher figures widely anticipated and a recovery could be forming."
The SEEK Employment Index
The SEI increased by a seasonally adjusted 2.9 per cent in January.
New South Wales (7.3 per cent) and Western Australia (4.9 per cent) significantly contributed to the
increase in the index, while the job market in Victoria (3 per cent), South Australia (2.2 per cent) and
Queensland (2 per cent) enjoyed a moderate improvement. This trend means that it's becoming gradually
easier for jobseekers to find jobs and harder for employers to find candidates.

New job ads increased in all states and territories. January's improvement was lead by New South Wales
(10.5 per cent) and South Australia (10.4 per cent). Western Australia (8.7 per cent), Queensland (7.8 per
cent) and Victoria (7.1 per cent) recorded solid increases.*

NEW JOB ADS RISE CAPS OFF 2009 REBOUND
THE SEEK EMPLOYMENT INDEX (SEI), a dynamic snapshot of the match between the supply of jobseekers (applications) and the demand for workers (job ads) on seek.com.au, firmed by 1.7 per cent for December.
New job ads rose by a seasonally adjusted 3.5 per cent, while applications fell by 1.2 per cent.
Overall new job ads were down 14.6 per cent for 2009. However, it was very much a tale of two halves—the first experienced significant losses, and the second witnessing a significant pick-up, with the trend now heading very much in the right direction.

SEEK Employment Managing Director Joe Powell said second half of 2009 was encouraging, with new job ads currently 21.3 per cent higher than in June 2009, the low point in the current cycle.
"The pace of the economic recovery—particularly its impact on the labour market—remains uncertain," said Mr Powell.
"But looking at the trend in new job ads, one can be hopeful that unemployment has started to peak in this cycle at 5.8 per cent, rather than the higher figures widely anticipated earlier in 2009."
Mr Powell also suggested the SEI will remain an important tool in understanding the nature of the recovery.
"As the SEI is the only index that measures the supply and demand aspects of the labour market, it will provide a unique and valuable guide to the pace of this improvement during 2010."
The SEEK Employment Index
The SEI increased by a seasonally adjusted 1.7 per cent in December.
Western Australia (8.1 per cent) and South Australia (4.6 per cent) significantly contributed to the increase in the index, while the job market in Victoria (2.1 per cent), New South Wales and Queensland (both 0.8 per cent) enjoyed a moderate improvement.

New job ads increased in all states and territories. December's improvement was lead by Western Australia who recorded an 11.2 per cent increase.
South Australia (4.9 per cent), Victoria (4.7 per cent) and New South Wales (3.6 per cent) recorded solid increases, while Queensland experienced a moderate increase of 1.6 per cent.
Job Applications
New job applications rose by a seasonally adjusted 2.5 per cent for December—consistent with a stagnation over the past six months. This metric is important as an indicator on how hard, or easy it is for employers to find new employees. For jobseekers conversely it also shows if its getting easier to secure a role, or harder.
However, a number of positions remain fiercely competitive.
This is a unique indicator in the market and in due course, can highlight the increase in skills shortages in Australia and New Zealand.
